Marc Webb Directing New Spider-Man!

(500) Days of Summer director Marc Webb has signed on to direct the Spider-Man reboot. Webb earned much acclaim from his debut movie, but the Spider-Man franchise is a different beast. Sony wants a more intimate human story of Peter Parker and they’ve given the keys to Marc Webb to humanize Spider-Man in the next film.

This is what he said about the opportunity:

“This is a dream come true and I couldn’t be more aware of the challenge, responsibility, or opportunity. Sam Raimi’s virtuoso rendering of Spider-Man is a humbling precedent to follow and build upon. The first three films are beloved for good reason. But I think the Spider-Man mythology transcends not only generations but directors as well. I am signing on not to ‘take over’ from Sam. That would be impossible. Not to mention arrogant. I’m here because there’s an opportunity for ideas, stories, and histories that will add a new dimension, canvas, and creative voice to Spider-Man.”

Sam Raimi is a hard man to replace, but after the 3rd film it was clear that Sony was in control of this franchise. From Sony’s point of view Webb is the perfect director since he did direct my 2009 film of the year, (500) days of summer a story that shows a realistic view on love. Webb is a talented director no doubt, but I really hope he doesn’t turn this franchise into (500) days of Spider-Man. If anyone can do a Spidey flick it would be Webb, he’s got the last name for it. Zing!
